Understanding Activated Carbon Pore Structure: Micropores vs Mesopores
Activated carbon's adsorption capacity is fundamentally determined by its pore structure. Micropores (less than 2nm) provide the majority of surface area and are essential for adsorbing small molecules like chlorine and VOCs. Mesopores (2-50nm) serve as transport channels and are critical for adsorbing larger organic molecules such as color compounds and humic acids.
